California beer maker has the last laugh in his German brewery
Some Germans thought Greg Koch was courageous. Others considered the Californian crazy. In one of the world's biggest beer drinking countries, already saturated with 1,388 breweries and 5,000 brands of beer, the entrepreneur from San Diego was determined to establish an American-style craft beer brewery. It took courage, craziness — and chutzpah. But a year after Koch opened his now-thriving brewery, beer garden and restaurant in the Mariendorf section of south-central Berlin, Germans are no longer laughing at the 52-year-old executive chairman and co-founder of Stone Brewing Co.

Beer Man: Stone’s array of hops makes Dayslayer a winner
Stone has always been one of my favorite breweries, especially when it comes to the American pale ale and American India pale ale styles. Most of those styles I’ve had from Stone veer away from the pine-forward and excessively bitter hops, and chalky aftertaste that I am not fond of, although I’m sure they have made ales fitting that profile. While a name like Dayslayer India Pale Lager might indicate it would be an extreme assault on the taste buds, that turned out not to be the case.

Virginia may be for craft beer lovers, but are all Virginians making sure they are drinking nothing but the freshest brews? Probably not. “The aging process of beer can degrade some of the flavor and aroma compounds over time to a point where the beer is deviated from what the brewer originally intended,” said Jeff Martin, quality assurance manager at Stone Brewing in Richmond.
