Mikhail w/ Coconut (2016 Stone ESPRESSO Imperial Russian Stout Aged in Bourbon Barrels w/ Coconut added)

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 13.5%

IBUS: 43

Appearance: Dark black like an Imperial Russian Stout should be!

Aroma: Coffee, coconut, bourbon barrel, and roasted malts with subdued coffee aroma.

Taste: Intense barrel character right up front with strong woody oak flavor, sweet coconut, some oak derived vanilla character, espresso, and the strong roasted malt character and heavy mouthfeel you would expect from Stone Imperial Russian Stout.  Espresso, rich coconut, and barrel flavors really linger in the aftertaste and the finish is very long on this beer. 

Overall: We used 3 lbs. of freshly toasted coconut and a pound and a half of coarse ground espresso per barrel to make this beer.  The base beer was 14 month barrel aged Stone Imperial Russian Stout, one of the best barrel aged beers in our portfolio.  The end result is a very smooth barrel aged beer with lingering complexity.  Not as much sweetness as we expected, with the coconut adding richness and mouthfeel, and the espresso contributing dryness and an additional element of roastiness to an already very complex beer.
