('04 Double Bastard Ale, '02 Vertical Epic, and '03 Vertical Epic also tasted during this session)

Steve Wagner
President & Brewmaster
Appearance:
Fortunately it looks identical to the 2004 we just tasted!
Aroma:
Hops a little more prominent and the age less apparent (than the 2004).
Flavor:
Bitterness is much more prominent along with the hop flavor, but still very nice malt complexity underneath.
Palate:
Very big but the bitterness lingers and lightens the heavy malt load.
Overall:
Tastes more like a Bastard when it’s younger, but it matures nicely too.

Mitch Steele
Head Brewer
Appearance:
Deep amber with red hues, bright and tan foam.
Aroma:
Syrupy, some yeastiness, fruit – peaches again, hops. A very intense beer with some spicy hop notes.
Flavor:
Very malty, estery, hoppy, a bit of sherry, very little graininess and some alcohol heat.
Palate:
Bitter end, very full bodied with some heat.
Overall:
VERY tasty. Retaining lots of hop character and the flavors have blended together very well.

Greg Koch
Chairman & CEO
Appearance:
Brighter and clearer than the 2004 version.
Aroma:
Very different aroma: more fruit and a little hoppier. Not the Earthiness or hotness of the ’04 version.
Flavor:

Zing! Is this the same beer as the 2004?!

Palate:
Much “livelier” yet overall similar level of intensity as the ’04…just different.
Overall:
Overall, I currently prefer the ’05 over the ’04.

Appearance:
Brighter (clearer) than the ’04 version, great CO2, and a beautiful copper color.
Aroma:
Hops, malt, more hops, more malt, some fruit, and some earthiness.
Flavor:
Sweet, hoppy, and complex with malt flavors dominating but an underlying doughy-yeasty character.
Palate:
Full bodied – really big, with a nice bitterness and rounded maltiness.
Overall:
No wonder this and the other years of Double Bastard Ale are the hardest for me to cellar of all the Stone beers…just awesome!

Tom Garcia
Brewer
Appearance:
Clear, brownish amber with good CO2.
Aroma:
Bitter, a touch of Earth, high phenols, slight vegetative, and fermenting peaches.
Flavor:
Earthy bitter hops, peaches, and a touch of roasted toffee.
Palate:
Full bodied, a little dry, and hot!
Overall:
Very complex…

Art Hogarth

Appearance:
A very nice golden amber color (with hints of yellow instead of red like the ‘04), and very clear.
Aroma:
Clean, fruity and a very different and sweeter smell than the 2004 edition.
Flavor:
More in your face malt hoppiness with a mild sweet tartness.
Palate:
Big and full bodied, rich, sugary aftertaste that lingers nicely.
Overall:
Wonderful!
