The first time we joined forces with Samuel and Paulo Cavalcanti of Bodebrown was in 2012 when Stone co-founder Greg Koch traveled to Brazil to brew the landmark Stone / Bodebrown Cacau IPA. Fast forward to September 2016, Bodebrown co-founders Samuel and Paulo made the journey to Berlin to attend our Stone Berlin Grand Opening Celebration and we officially began formulating the idea for this collaboration. Finally, everything came together in late November of 2017, and we brewed this long-anticipated special beer. “Virando Brasiliero con Madeira Vermelha” means “‘turning Brazilian’ with red wood,” which we chose for its uniquely Brazilian flavor thanks to aging on Amburana wood, traditionally used in the production of Brazil’s famous spirit, cachaça.

No lemons, no melon. Though there is a good amount of orange peel and tangerine in this one, but we’ll get to that in a moment. First, we will refer you back to February 2, 2002 (otherwise known as 02.02.02) when we released the first of our now deified decade-spanning Stone Vertical Epic Ale series. The next was released on 03.03.03, then 04.04.04 all the way up until 12.12.12. As we realized that the 18th anniversary of that first release is the magnificently palindromic date of 02.02.2020, we knew a suitably epic tribute as a reviver was necessary. Call it our civic duty. We had to step it up a level. Miss it? No sir, no madam. This, like the groundbreaking original series, is a half Belgian-inspired, half Stone-inspired ale. Too hot to hoot? Not in our minds. This calendar occurrence doesn’t come around often...not for another one thousand and ten years, one month and one day (wow)...so you should be celebrating it. With a beer. Like we are. Regard a mere mad rager? Count on it.

25 years ago, Stone celebrated the first anniversary of the fledgling brewery with a beer that was a far cry from the craft beer norms of the time. It was far too intense. It was far too hoppy and bitter. Yet it became the shot heard ‘round the world, and beer history was changed forever. This beer was the brewery’s flagship Stone IPA. This year, to celebrate the beer that (eventually) launched generations of hop fanatics, the brewery presents an imperial version that made Stone’s name among the budding craft beer legions. Stone IPA is still Stone’s best-selling beer. 

Stone 26th Anniversary Imperial IPA is loaded with gloriously bitter notes of piney, citrus, resinous dankness. It’s full-bodied and warming at 9.7% ABV. Heaps of Centennial hops make this everything there is to love about Stone’s classic West Coast IPA style. Pair it with other bold flavors like Shiitake Garlic Noodles, Mango Habanero Shrimp Tacos and summary peach cobbler.
