A Wee Heavy (AKA Scotch Ale) is not a beer style you might usually associate with Stone Brewing, but then again, there is nothing usual about this amazing beer.

The recipe comes Jason Dunn’s winning submission in the 2020 American Homebrewers Association Rally. As the name implies, the beer is inspired by pineapple upside-down cake. He wanted to create an in-depth malt profile, so it was decided to use a wee heavy base, boil it for an extended time to bring forth the rich caramel flavors, then incorporate pineapple to help cut through the sweetness of the malts and create a deliciously decadent dessert beer.

First brewed in 2011, this IPA is something truly magnificent, unique, and well worth brewing again. The recipe was a collaboration with our friends Toshi Ishii (whose first brewing job was at Stone for many years, before going on to become one of Japan’s most celebrated craft brewers), and Brian Baird (who founded Japan’s Baird Brewing). Whole leaf green tea adds a gentle accent to the blend of northern and southern hemisphere hops in this recipe, and our fans have been asking (some demanding) for its bright herbaceousness to make a return for years. To have such an innovative creation be so fervently enjoyed by nearly everyone who tries it – there’s nothing better. This is an aggressive beer. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory—maybe something with a multimillion-dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it’s made at an independent brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless seltzer / fizzy yellow beer / whatever-the-hell will give you more sex appeal. Perhaps you think multimillion-dollar ad campaigns make all that junk taste better. Perhaps you’re mouthing your words as you read this.

Ah, the delights of autumn - crunchy leaves, crisp air, carved pumpkins and of course, seasonal beers. Inspired by German styles like Märzen, Dunkel and Schwarzbier, brewers Ashley Collins and Rich Carney were aiming for a ghoulish twist on a dark lager. Our distinctive Xocoveza mocha stout, crafted to mimic the piquant flavors of Mexican hot chocolate, is back. This creamy, semisweet milk stout has pronounced tiers of chocolate, coffee, pasilla peppers, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. The multi-year journey of this beer began in 2006 at the Craft Brewers Conference in Seattle when our own Greg Koch met and first became friends with Ron Jeffries, Brewmaster of the famed Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales. In 2007, on a trip to Tokyo, Greg by chance encountered Kjetil Jikuin of Norway’s Nøgne-Ø brewery and formed another new friendship. 2008 found Ron, Kjetil and our team creating a beer that became known as The Special Holiday Ale. The following year found versions created in Norway, and Michigan, the former captured in a documentary called “Stone Skips Across The Pond” (still available online, and also featuring a stop at the then-2-year-old BrewDog). Fast forward to the present and the trio have come together again. However, as the saying goes, “Nothing stays the same,” and we find that Kjetil has moved to Crete and started Solo Brewing there. And as life brings change, the brewing team felt that with this special opportunity to honor the creation of Stone Berlin with this Collaboration, the beer should change too. After a multi-year history of brewing iterations in California, Michigan and Norway, this version was brewed for the first time in Berlin. It’s inspired by the original versions, but delightfully different.
