Radici. Due icone si incontrano a Berlino per augurare in bocca al lupo alla craft beer revolution. Collaborateurs Teo Musso and Greg Koch share many things in common. Chief among them they began their rise to prominence in the late 1990’s with big, bold beers, and these gents are, shall we say, full of braggadocio, swagger, and unrepentant joie de vivre. Also in common was the way in which, with aggressive intention, they each so cavalierly sabotaged norms that had been so irresponsibly led by the lowest common denominator purveyors of industrial beer. Thus, it’s only natural that having first met in Piozzo, Italy in 2000, the pair found themselves to be international comrades and lifelong friends in the craft beer revolution.

This beer needs to be sufficiently scaled to the personalities brewing it. Therefore, it is unquestionably full of braggadocio, swagger, and unrepentant joie de vivre.

High in the Italian Alps, whence the gentian root [radice di genziana] was sourced, lie the lairs of Italian wolves (natch). Lupo and luppulo is Italian for wolf and hops, respectively. This is all the excuse that we needed.

Originally brewed to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Arrogant Bastard Ale, Double Bastard Ale debuted in November 1998 as an amped-up version of that already aggressive beer. This heavy ale is appreciated by only a few, and that's just fine with us. We didn't brew this behemoth to please anyone other than ourselves.

This is a beloved stout. When first introduced as a limited special collaboration release with San Diego homebrewer Chris Banker (after his recipe won our annual homebrew competition) and Cerveceria Insurgente, it was an instant hit and fans began clamoring for its return. Seeing as how its amazing flavor profile is evocative of Mexican hot chocolate, featuring coffee, pasilla peppers, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and a generous amount of our own in-house made chocolate, we concluded it was the perfect stout to re-release in celebration of the Holidays and the entire winter season. This is now a highly anticipated yearly tradition that we are pleased to present from us to you, and makes a perfect wintry gift from you to your friends, loved ones, or simply to yourself.

One of the first corked-and-caged beers we ever released. We took our legendary Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine and replaced its classic yeast strain with a Belgian-inspired variant. Then we took some of that incredible creation and let it rest in red wine barrels to take on an entirely new depth of flavor. We held back a few cases for the last 12(!) years and let it continue maturing carefully in our cellar.

Tucked away on Tremont street, just a few blocks from the pier, you’ll find our oasis. The Stone Brewing Tap Room – Oceanside is our oldest satellite location (est. 2012). Visitors & locals alike have enjoyed everything from live music, vinyl record pop-up shops, oyster tastings, live tiki carvings, and the city’s weekly Sunset Market. To commemorate 10 years of this coastal hideaway, the team devised a beer that’s just as laid-back yet vibrant as Oside itself. Brewed in the “Cold IPA” style – that is, lager-inspired but hopped to high heaven – it’s refreshingly easy-drinking thanks to flaked rice & corn in the grain bill, and a combo of pellet & cryo Mosaic hops plus our own sponsored HBC 843 creates a citrusy hop profile that’s like drinking a sunset.

Since its inception in 2013, w00tstout has been the most awesomely colossal release we brew. For this special version, we knew we needed to make it unique, but we knew regular unique wouldn’t be enough…the challenge was how to make it extra fantastically w00ty unique. Thusly the conundrum: How do you brew a BIGGER, BOLDER version of the biggest thing you make? Our trio was ready to take on this very very real struggle. For humanity. For you. For the sheer weightiness of it all. That’s what heroes do. Collective brainpower produced the idea to go nuts and add almonds and hazelnuts in addition to pecans and use German whiskey barrels.

Thus, this libation that has been compared to the equivalent of a Kentucky Derby Pie became the German equivalent to the heretofore uninvented malt & whiskey soaked…errr, MaltNutloaf. So how do you say “MaltNutloaf” in German? The answer is you don’t. Mein Gott, no one should.

Sometimes the best part of a journey is when something unplanned happens. You make an unexpected swerve but end up at a destination even better than you hoped for.

That’s what we have here: Stone Travelogue Triple IPA. 

Our trek started with Amarillo hops – a favorite from Stone history that we’ve fallen in love with all over again – combined with Loral and Mosaic. Meanwhile, we used flaked wheat and oats, which you’d typically see used in a hazy beer, but filtered this one for a classic, bright appearance.

That all went according to plan. But the surprise came when this beer that we expected to be a double IPA, came out at a massive 10.7% ABV. Despite the big alcohol content, this beer is incredibly smooth, letting the intense tropical & citrus notes shine with a glorious lingering hoppiness.

It was the double that ended up a triple. It’s a clear IPA with the juicy notes of a hazy. This beer is a tremendously tasty journey and we invite you to take a ride.

So, your knowledge of caffè is such that you’ve correctly determined that “depth-charged” refers to the addition of espresso-roasted coffee beans. Well, bully for you. For all I know, you picked that up hanging out at some coffee megachain amid a microcosmic mishmash of vapid layabouts, metro hipsters, and laptop-sporting exhibitionists trying to convince the world (and themselves) that they’re click-clacking out the great American-novel-cum-screenplay for a future summer blockbuster. I could surely teach you a thing or two were I inclined…which I’m NOT. Perhaps you’re eyeing my backside because you’re really into coffee. Nothing wrong there, but if you’ve come to me expecting some beery incarnation of your security blanket “me time” soy frappélatte or similarly dainty concoction, you’re in for some grande-sized disappointment. I do not exist to provide a comforting mode of conveyance for your jittery, caffeinated fantasies. Nothing about me is smooth, subtle, or built for comfort. Those who should be holding this bottle (en route to opening and indulging in what awaits within) are really into ME. Get your cinnamon mochaccino fix elsewhere. This here’s strictly for adult men and women who don’t require the culinary crutch of added fat and sweeteners. My motto: Bold and brave or not at all.
